Hi everybody, It is a beautiful Sunday here in Greenpoint Brooklyn. I spent a lot of yesterday putting together my website with Longtime Greenpointer author and my tech Guru Jorge Cruz. Today I am going to discuss a Williamsburg landmark, the Domino plant, which was once the world’s largest sugar refinery and the crown jewel in a cartel called the American Sugar Refining Corporation. I wrote about it in my book The Rise and Fall of the Sugar King, but I am not alone in my fascination for this relic of the area’s industrial past. One of my neighbors is the super talented illustrator Amy Marino Lyons. She wrote a Historical fictional story for young adults describing a family whose father worked in the plant. Amy is also a huge fan of the best book ever written about Brooklyn Betty Smith’s A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Amy actually did the drawing on the cover of the newest version of the novel. I love Amy’s artwork not only because she is so talented, but also because the scenes she depicts are from our area. Click the link to see her amazing illustrations. Amy is eager to come on some of walking tours.
